State Park Thunder fall in game 1. State Park (Thunder) 4 East Side (South Bend) 13 Along the banks of the Ohio River, our Thunder played tenaciously, however, they could not hold on to an early lead. Both teams had the same number of hits but the Thunder could not convert as many into runs. Defensively, the Thunder held our own on the field. Starting for State park was Savannah McCafferty who struck out eight. Pitching in relief were Jordan Wadding with two K’s, and Lia Lombardini also with two K’s. Special mention goes out to Abby Brown who made a major league diving catch to snag a liner at shortstop. Although injuring her shoulder, she decided to stay in the game. Offensively, Brown also popped a double into center and scored one run. Jordan Wadding hit a single. Rebecca Rizer scored two runs. Lia Lombardini also had one run scored. Britany Milzarek received a base on balls. Also contributing both offensively and defensively were: Alex Raudry, Britta Johnson, Kendall Fancher-Keller and Madeline Hamady.
Moving forward the girl’s spirits are high and we are still in it to win it! Next Game Friday @ 3:00 P.M. Stay tuned for more coverage…
State Park 15 – Southport 14
The weather was warm but comfortable at the beginning of the game only to get hot after the second inning. It became really hot near the end of the game (or maybe it was just this reporter) with this nail biter of a contest. The State Park Thunder came back from a 4
th inning 11-7 deficit to take a 15-12 lead and held on for a 15 –14 win.
Offensively our performance was solid. Abby Brown went 2-3 with a double; Brittany Milzarek got a single and drove in two. Britta Johnson knocked in the go ahead runs with a 2 RBI line drive to right. Jordan Wadding got a single and scored three runs, while Savannah McCaferty got a single and scored two.
Defensively, our performance was equally as solid. Abby Brown had another good defensive showing. Bridget Mickus made a running running catch to hold two runs from scoring. A special mention for Rebecca Rizer for playing the entire 6 inning game behind home plate in the heat. Jordan Wadding made an awesome over the shoulder catch for the final out with a runner on third. What a thriller!
Jordan started the game and pitched three with five Ks , Lia Lombardini came in relief for three striking out the last batter with 3 straight strikes with the tying run on 3rd to get the win. Also contributing significantly were Alex Raudry, Kendall Fancher-Keller, and Madeline Hamady.
The next step is our game on Saturday @ 7:30 P.M. With a win our fate to advance is not guaranteed but depending on the outcomes of the other pool contests, we have a pretty good chance of playing on Sunday in the finals. So: Fasten those safety belts! More to come…
State Park 16, Silver Creek 6
The 9-10 All-Stars softball "Thunder" endsTournament play with a win.
On a very hot Saturday in Jeffersonville, we kept our girls cool. Fortunately, we had a 7:30 P.M. start and a small breeze to make conditions bearable. Our girls played well both offensively and defensively and captured a 16-6 win in five innings. Our team tied for first with our win, but unfortunately, ties get decided by an average of runs given up defensively and we were on the losing end of that statistic. We return home with a respectable 2-1 record in tournament play.
Offensively in this game Jordan Wadding had 4 hits and scored three runs, Brittany Milzarek had two hit and two runs scored. Savannah McCafferty helped her own cause with a single a double and a run scored. Alex Raudry had a hit and a run scored. Kendall Fancher-Keller scored three runs. Contributing with two runs scored Rebecca Rizer, Britta Johnson and Lia Lombardini.
On the defensive side State Park was lead by Abby Brown with three defensive putouts including a double play. Bridget Mickus made an awesome play in right field doubled the runner off at first base. Savanah McCafferty pitched the complete game getting five strike outs.
Thanks to the dedication of our Manager Jody Wadding and coach Larry Rizer along with the help of Stan Keller and parents our girls had a positive experience in our state tournament.
Congratulations to the players and staff for a job well done! You represented State Park well in District, Sectional, and State levels of play!
Earlier in the day our girls were able to showcase their athletic prowess in a skills competition. Savanah, Kendall, and Madeline Hamady represented state park in the running competition. Bridget, Jordan and Lia participated in the bunting competition. Highlighting the competition was the Homerun Derby contest where Becky Rizer and Brittany Milzarek competed and Brittany won the competition where Brittany crushed two out of five balls to be named home run derby "Queen" where she was awarded a brand new pink Louisville Slugger bat.
